Frequently Asked Questions
What are Sugar Flowers?
Sugar flowers offer a unique alternative to fresh flowers with no need to worry about pesticides or toxins, and sugar flowers stay fresher for much longer!
Sugar flowers are handcrafted flowers made from an edible clay-like material called gum paste. The gum-paste contains egg whites. Each flower is made by hand so just like in nature, every flower is unique. Colors may vary slightly due to the handmade nature, and differences in computer screens.
Sugar flowers are fragile and should be handled with care. However, they are strong enough to be placed on cakes. Although you should be gentle with sugar flowers, you don’t have to be afraid!
Gum-paste flowers are not edible as they contain non-edible supports and may be coloured with non-toxic but non-edible dust, and they need to be removed (with posy sticks) before cutting the cake. These flowers are not for consumption. They are usually kept as souvenirs, especially if they have been on a wedding cake.
Storage of Sugar Flowers
Sugar flowers and leaves should be stored at room temperature away from sunlight and humidity. They can be stored in a cardboard box as it allows air circulation. Humidity can cause the gum-paste to melt and too much exposure to sunlight or fluorescent light can cause colours to fade. These sugar flowers can be stored for up to 6 weeks following these instructions. Cake Decorators Glaze can be used to add protective barrier to any moisture in the atmosphere.
Usage of Sugar Flowers
Sugar flowers can be used on buttercream cakes, fondant cakes, ganache cakes, naked cakes, cupcakes or even as floral centrepieces. Each sugar flower is made on a flexible florist wire for easy placement.
Sugar flowers are made with edible materials such as gum-paste, sugar and egg whites. They also contain non-edible ingredients like floral wire, cotton or plastic stamens, or styrofoam cores, therefore these flowers are for decorative use only and not for consumption.
